How do I know if my gutters are protecting my house?
There are many warning signs that can help you determine whether or not your gutters are working properly and helping to protect your home from water damage. Most gutter systems will last about 15 years depending on if they received regular maintenance and were properly installed. Now, due to improvements in materials used, new installation techniques, and the availability of gutter protection, homeowners can see a lifespan of 30 or more years from their gutters.
Certain signs make it obvious your gutters need replaced, but others can be a little more subtle. If you have any questions or are unsure about the condition of your gutters please give us a call and we’ll be happy to set up a free estimate.
Obvious Warning Signs:
Gutters are pulling away from your home, possibly hanging off the house
Downspouts are disconnected from either the gutter or the house
Water damage inside the house or obvious signs of water marks outside
Visible cracks in the gutters – small cracks will lead to larger ones
Overflowing gutters
Visible rust
Water drip markings on fascia
Subtle Warning Signs:
Consistent clogging in a particular spot – this can be a sign of a small crack that is catching the debris and backing up or it may be a sign of improper installation
Nail heads popping out – this can be a sign that your gutters are beginning to pull away from the house
Peeling paint and/or mold in areas near the base of the home – this can be a sign that water is not properly being directed away from your home
Lines or erosion in your landscaping below the gutters – this can also be a sign that water is not properly being directed away from your home
Rotting deck boards, windowsills, garage doors, exterior doors, and cracking or upheaval of sidewalks, patios, driveways, or stairs
Storm damage from wind and hail, can sometimes cause damage to the gutters leaving them susceptible to rust and clogging so it is always a good idea to inspect your gutters after a major storm
